With this letter I would like to recommend Robert Groen as a player for your college team. At this time I am the head coach of the club where Robert plays and in this capacity I have been working with him for the past four years. From 1995-2004 I have been working for the K.N.L.T.B.  (the Dutch U.S.T.A.) as the head coach of junior education in the central region of Holland. This position has given me great insight in the development of junior players. Several players I coached went on to become excellent college tennis-players and I am confident that Robert will more than hold his own in the college circuit.

When I met Robert 4 years ago, I could already see the tenacity to perform well in his eyes. This asset in his character has done well for him, and brought him to the level he is currently playing at. Seldom have I had a harder working player on the court than Robert. His willingness to work for every point and train hard every day gives him an edge in his match-playing abilities. His mental toughness makes him difficult to beat from the baseline. He has good groundstrokes and great stamina and agility. His volleys and net-positioning are well above average. During the past four years we have worked hard on this aspect of his game and he has improved considerably. His service has improved tremendously, especially his second serve has become very solid. He’s an intelligent player who can make the right tactical adjustments in matches if necessary. He reads opponents well. From a coach’s point of view Robert is fantastic to work with; he always works hard and is always eager to learn. There is no doubt in my mind that he will continue to progress his game and become a very useful player for any college that’s lucky enough to have him.

Off the court Robert is a very likeable guy. The other players he trains with are very fond of him and show great respect for his mentality. To be honest, they don’t want to see him leave at all! Also with the senior club-players Robert seems to be quite popular, as he is decent and gentle in conversation. As mentioned before, Robert is  an intelligent kid and gets good grades at school. This is because he works hard at this, he realises that it’s important for him to have a good education. His easy-going character will make him fit in very easily, I am confident about that. In my opinion Robert will make an excellent student as well as a tennis player for the College that he will end up playing for.
